There is growing evidence to suggest that wearing flat or minimalist footwear can be a non-surgical treatment option for hip osteoarthritis. Here are some key findings from recent research studies:

  1. Reduction in Joint Loading: A study published in the Annals of Physical Rehabilitation Medicine found that wearing minimalist footwear was associated with reduced joint loading in people with hip osteoarthritis. This suggests that wearing minimalist shoes may help to relieve pain and slow the progression of the disease.
  2. Improved Walking Biomechanics: Another study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research found that wearing minimalist shoes led to improvements in walking biomechanics in people with hip osteoarthritis. Specifically, participants demonstrated reduced hip adduction and internal rotation, which are both associated with increased joint loading and pain.
  3. Increased Strength and Function: A study published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies found that a 12-week program of minimalist shoe walking and strength training led to improvements in muscle strength and functional ability in people with hip osteoarthritis.
  4. Reduced Pain and Disability: A systematic review published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy found that wearing minimalist footwear was associated with reduced pain and disability in people with hip osteoarthritis.

Overall, while further research is needed to fully understand the benefits of minimalist footwear for hip osteoarthritis, current evidence suggests that it may be a promising non-surgical treatment option. However, it is important to consult with your Fortitude.Physio team before making any changes to your treatment plan.
